To Every Woman in Fintech

Encouraging women in fintech and payments to explore roles without waiting for perfection. Learn why your experience (professional and personal) matters more than a perfect CV.

September 16, 2025

You don’t need to be perfect to take your place in this industry.

To every woman working in fintech, payments, or tech - this one’s for you.

You are enough.

Let’s talk about what’s really holding many women back.

At Evotym, we talk to incredible women in fintech every day. And there’s a pattern we can’t ignore.

Too many are waiting. Waiting to feel "ready." Waiting for perfect language skills. Waiting to tick every box on a job description. Waiting for some invisible green light to say, "Now you're allowed."

Meanwhile, we’re speaking to hiring managers who would love to meet someone just like you.

We see talented, experienced, capable women - and we see hesitation where there should be confidence. We see self-doubt where there should be self-belief.

You don’t need to wait until everything feels perfect. You don’t need to over-prepare or underplay. You are enough - today, exactly as you are.

That’s why we wanted to write this post. As a small reminder, from us to you - that you don’t need permission to take up space in this industry. You just need to show up.

You don’t have to be perfect. You just have to show up.

A recent piece by Giulia Secco from Fnality touched on something important - the pressure many women feel to constantly prove their value. As she put it, "I know I had to work hard on believing that I belonged."

That feeling is something we encounter often. Even women who’ve led departments or run complex projects say they feel like imposters. Some nearly skip applying to leadership roles because of one bullet point they don’t meet.

But success in the fintech space isn’t about having all the answers from day one. It’s about curiosity. Drive. The ability to keep moving even when you feel unsure. You don’t need perfection - you need presence. And a bit of belief in yourself, even when your voice shakes.

Take the seat. Even if it feels uncomfortable.

At Evotym, we’ve had countless conversations with women who say things like:

  • “I’m not technical enough.”
  • “My English isn’t strong.”
  • “I’ve only worked in small startups - they probably want someone with big company experience.”

Here’s the truth: the industry doesn’t need more polished profiles. It needs people with lived experience. People who know how to build, how to listen, how to adapt, how to lead with empathy. It needs you.

You don’t need another certificate to be qualified - although continuous learning is always valuable, most fintech roles prioritize relevant experience, adaptability, and problem-solving over formal qualifications. When reviewing a job opportunity, focus on whether the responsibilities align with your experience and growth potential - even if you don’t meet every single requirement.

Your life experience - whether it’s leading a project, navigating change, mentoring others, or switching industries - also holds real value. Employers increasingly recognize the importance of soft skills and adaptability, especially in dynamic, fast-paced environments like fintech. If you believe you can contribute and grow into the role, it’s worth exploring. Candidates who take initiative and demonstrate potential are often valued just as much as those with a perfect match on paper.

Some recent data challenges the long-standing '100% match' myth. According to research from the Behavioural Insights Team, women apply when they meet 56% of the requirements, while men apply when they meet just 52%. Much of this small difference in willingness to apply is explained by  gender differences in self-perceptions of meeting the overall requirements.

The Evotym team believes:

If you match 60% - apply.
If you believe you can grow into it - apply.
If your gut says “this could be me” - please, apply.

You belong here. And the fintech space benefits from diverse voices, practical thinkers, and people who’ve grown through real-world challenges - not just polished resumes.

Common hiring myths - and what’s actually true

Even today, many talented professionals second-guess themselves because of outdated assumptions about what it takes to succeed in fintech. Let’s break down a few of the most common myths we hear - and what’s actually true based on our experience at Evotym.

Myth: You need a degree in finance or coding to work in fintech.
Truth: Many roles in fintech are non-technical - marketing, HR, and customer success are just as critical to success.

Myth: If you haven’t worked in a top startup or big tech, you won’t be considered.
Truth: Companies value diverse experience - especially from those who’ve built teams under pressure, adapted quickly, or scaled operations in growing companies.

These examples are just the beginning. There are many paths into fintech - and many ways to succeed once you're in. If you're open to learning, growing, and contributing, there’s space for you here.
